What is ISO14064?

What is ISO14064?

Carbon TRACC base their carbon related services on the ISO14064 standards. Health and safety standards reduce accidents in the workplace. Similarly, environmental management standards reduce environmental impacts, reduce waste and encourage sustainability.

The ISO or International Organisation for Standardization developed and published the International Standards.  Morefore, ISO forms a bridge between the public and private sectors and is a non-governmental organization.  In addition to being a network of the national standards institutes from 157 countries all over the world.

ISO14064 standards developed (in three parts) over several years by the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO).   The standards were launched in spring 2006. Therefore, allowing organisations take part in emissions trading schemes. This is done using a single globally recognized standard broken down into three parts.  This new standard adds to the ISO 14000 series of International Standards for environmental management.

The ISO14064 standard provides governments, businesses, regions and other organizations with an integrated set of tools. In addition, these tools allow programmes for accurate measuring, quantifying and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In parallel with the emergence of regulated or mandatory schemes; relating to monitoring, reporting and verification of Greenhouse Gases (GHG), organisations outside of mandatory or regulated schemes (such as the EU Emission Trading Scheme or the UN CDM mechanism scheme) also wish to monitor and report their emissions ( organization’s carbon footprint).

The three parts of the ISO14064 standard?

ISO 14064 consists of three parts. These details the specification as well as guidance for quantification and reporting, reduction & removal and verification & validation of greenhouse gases.

  1. ISO 14064-1 Part 1: This course includes specification with guidance at the organizational level- for Quantification and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removal. It provides principles and requirements for quantifying and reporting an organization’s carbon footprint.
  2.  ISO 14064-2 Part 2: The second part of this course includes specification with Guidance at the Project Level- for Quantification, Monitoring and Reporting of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions or Removal Enhancements. This provides principles and requirements for quantification, monitoring and reporting activities that create GHG reductions or removals.
  3. ISO 14064-3 Part 3: Final element of this course includes specification with Guidance for the Validation and Verification of Greenhouse Gas Assertions. It provides principles, requirements, and guidance for individuals conducting or managing verification or validation of organizational carbon inventory reports or project-level assertions.

Canadian Standards Association (CSA)

Canadian Standards Association (CSA) develops all of Carbon TRACC carbon emissions ISO 14064 courses. These Standards have been developed by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) in response to climate change concerns. Carbon TRACC participants fully in the ISO Technical Committee. The  Technical Committee (ISO) manages and develops these Standards.

ISO produce the ISO 14060 suite of standards and guidelines. ISO develop these in response to the need for auditable tools that will help address climate change. This is done through a systematic approach to greenhouse gas (GHG) quantification, monitoring, reporting, validation and verification. This is carried out in a comprehensive and auditable manner.

Carbon TRACC describes these courses as the interrelationships between the requirements of ISO 14064 and existing regional and national GHG programmes. In addition to other important protocols and standards. These include the World Business Council on Sustainable Development® Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
